Opening Prayer
O God, the King eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done your will with cheerfulness during the day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Scripture Reading
35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” 10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. – Matthew 9:35-10:1
Pray the Word
Pause. Remind yourself you are in God’s presence. And read again slowly, perhaps out loud. Ask the Lord, “What are you saying to me today? How does this word speak into my life.” Pay attention to anything the Holy Spirit highlights as you read. Is there a rebuke, an encouragement, an invitation to receive? A command to obey? Thank the Lord for his love for you. Sit in his presence, and give his word access to your heart.
Pray for the Church
Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. Pray for the teaching, proclaiming, healing ministry of Jesus to be continued at Sanctuary this year. Pray in particular:
- For powerful preaching on Sunday mornings that transforms lives.
- For teachers in our midst, in classes, seminars, home churches, retreats, to clearly explain the gospel.
- For healing of all kinds to happen regularly in the life of the church: physical healing, emotional healing, relational healing, spiritual healing. Pray for the prayer team and prayer ministers to facilitate healing encounters with the Spirit so that people are set free and delivered.
Pray for Apprenticeship of new leaders. Just as Jesus apprenticed the Twelve to do what He did, pray that our church will grow in leadership development and apprenticeship of new leaders. Pray in particular:
- That our Sunday teams will be places of apprenticeship and leadership multiplication
- That home churches will grow in developing and multiplying leadership.
- That pastoral interns and residents will grow in calling, competence and character.
- That Sanctuary will become a place that raises up Kingdom leaders, just as Jesus did.
Silence
Spend a few more moments quietly with Jesus, listening to anything He wants to say, or simply just being with Him in his presence.
Closing Prayer
O God of all the nations of the earth: Remember the multitudes who have been created in your image but have not known the redeeming work of our Savior Jesus Christ; and grant that, by the prayers and labors of your holy Church, they may be brought to know and worship you as you have been revealed in your Son; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
