Heart/Providence Prayer Room – Wednesday 6:30pm @ 12 Bassett Street Providence
Opening Prayer
O God, the King Eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done your will with cheerfulness during the day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Scripture
35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” 10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. – Matthew 9:35-10:1
Pray the Word
Pause. Remind yourself you are in God’s presence. And read again slowly, perhaps out loud. Ask the Lord, “What are you saying to me today? How does this word speak into my life.” Pay attention to anything the Holy Spirit highlights as you read. Is there a rebuke, an encouragement, an invitation to receive? A command to obey? Thank the Lord for his love for you. Sit in his presence, and give his word access to your heart.
Pray for the Church
Then he said to his disciples, “the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.”
We often think the harvest is few or small, though the workers are plentiful. We live in a post-Christian culture that is not interested in Jesus anymore. Right?
Wrong. The harvest is plentiful. Millions of lost souls await someone to tell them about Jesus. The problem is that the workers are few. And why are they few? Because they have not allowed God’s burning love for lost people to invade their hearts. This is what transforms an inert Christian into a worker in the harvest. They see that the harvest is plentiful, and ache that the workers are few. And they ask God to transform them, to use them, to activate them for the harvest.
Pray.
- Invite God to allow his compassion for lost people to invade your heart.
- Ask for God to activate inert Christians, starting with yourself, and make them useful in the harvest field – so that people will come to Jesus.
- Ask God to help believers, starting with you, and all through the church, to be moved with compassion like Jesus was, by the need people have for God.
- Ask God to use Alpha this year to help people enter the Kingdom.
- Ask God that people will hear the gospel on Sunday morning and come to faith.
- Pray that home churches will be spaces of hospitality where non Christians come in and meet Jesus.
- Pray that God will help us to prayerfully, winsomely, and courageously tell other people about our love for Him and what He’s done in our lives.
Silence
Spend a few more moments quietly with Jesus, listening to anything He wants to say, or simply just being with Him in his presence.
O God of all the nations of the earth: Remember the multitudes who have been created in your image but have not known the redeeming work of our Savior Jesus Christ; and grant that, by the prayers and labors of your holy Church, they may be brought to know and worship you as you have been revealed in your Son; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
